Golden grass grows in paths of Jalapăo, characteristic humid areas in Tocantins’ scrublands.“Syngonanthus nitens euriocaulaceae” (golden grass’ scientific name) handcrafting started in Mumbuca, a community in the state of Tocantins, Brazil, populated by former slaves. They used traditional techniques and indian influence in the beginning of XX century.
Golden Grass grows during the whole year. It must be gleaned only in September and November. It represents the only source of income for the communities in Ponte Alta, where golden grass is considered Jalapăo’s gold. This material shines more when, at the harvesting. The seeds are taken off and thrown back at the paths for next year. All this control is based on the standards of nature preservation, guaranteeing species perpetuation.
